Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
