Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
