Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators

The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”

Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Offseason Controversies and Media Attention

The incident comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central figure in a Netflix documentary that explored his role in developing the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its modern-era championship drought.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its continuing initiative to uphold professional conduct among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or wealth.
